Matt Gibson, now known professionally as MATTY G ROCK, is a Tasmanian-based recording artist, musician, and member of the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA). Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Matt moved to Australia in 2004 to pursue a new direction in his life.
Matt's passion for music began in his teenage years during the late 1980s, which laid the foundation for his future career. Inspired by legendary rock groups such as Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Pink Floyd, and The Doors, Matt developed an interest in playing the guitar at age 15.
In 2006, Matt established his early music success by founding the legendary Townsville rock band, The Blessed Outlaws. With this band, he recorded two independent albums and performed regularly around the Townsville region for 11 consecutive years, despite changes in the band's lineup. During this time, Matt continued to write and record songs, both with the band and as a solo artist.
Throughout his career, Matt has had the honor of supporting many of Australia's finest musicians. His impressive list of supporting acts includes Leo Sayer, Joe Camilleri & The Black Sorrows, Kasey Chambers, Diesel, The Baby Animals, Pseudo Echo, The Radiators, Phil Jamieson, Sarah McLeod, and Australian country rock legends The Wolfe Brothers. Matt and his band also opened for several well-known Australian tribute bands, including those paying homage to KISS, Queen, The Rolling Stones, and ABBA.
Notable performances in Matt's career include playing in front of a large grandstand audience during an NRL match in 2012 and performing for former Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett during his visit to North Queensland in 2010 when Mr. Garrett was the Environmental Minister. These experiences remain fond memories for Matt.
In 2007, Matt's dedication to music and songwriting led him to become a member of The Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA). A decade later, in 2017, Matt had a memorable encounter with one of the world's greatest guitarists, Angus Young from AC/DC, during a trip to Melbourne – an occasion he cherishes to this day.
After departing from The Blessed Outlaws in early 2017, Matt moved to Tasmania, where he quickly established himself among many other great local music artists. He continues to write and record his own music under the label Matt Gibson Music Tasmania. In a final touch to his evolving career, Matt changed his performing name to MATTY G ROCK, under which he continues to create and perform music.
